The Cincinnati Reds plan to leave Sarasota after city residents voted down funding for a stadium project to keep the baseball team's spring training here for another 30 years. The $16 million bond referendum to help fund a $45 million plan to rebuild Ed Smith Stadium failed in Tuesday's election by a narrow margin.
Sarasota County's anti-growth movement has rarely appeared stronger than it did at the polls Tuesday. Ignoring strong lobbying from the business community, voters in the city of Sarasota and Sarasota County overwhelmingly approved supermajority measures. The new requirements will make it more difficult for developers to build in many areas.
