On Independence Day July 4th we will celebrate freedom, on the day
after a celebration of Intellectual Freedom and Gay Pride will take
place. June is synonymous with the birth of the Gay Rights Movement
and has become know as a month of celebration of worldwide. The
Hillsborough County Commissioners. led by former Hillsborough County
Commissioner Ronda Storms, selected June to initiate a policy banning
support of Gay Pride and GLBT Pride Book Displays from public
libraries. This decision was not only an offense to intellectual
freedom, it was a slap in the face to Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and
Transgender people heard around the world.

The County Commissioners sent a clear message that GLBT people were
not welcome in Hillsborough County. But, instead of going quietly
into the good night of bigotry and discrimination, we vowed to
continue to show our opposition to this decision. On the June 14th
anniversary of the BOCC's vote, Brandon Pride held it's First Annual
GLBT Banned Book Displays and Reading.
So not to compete or diminish GLBT Pride Events taking place locally
in June, Brandon Pride will hold the Second Annual GLBT Banned Book
Displays and Reading on July 5th.
