"Dropout Factories" include many TampaBay Area High Schools; Florida and S.C. Rank Highest Number of Dropouts.

The Johns Hopkins study compares the number of freshmen and seniors at schools between 2001 and 2006. While it didn't track whether those students actually graduated, researchers said schools that lose more than half of their freshmen class by senior year usually don't get them back by graduation.

The study identified 1,700 schools across the nation as "dropout factories" where no more than 60 percent of freshmen make it to senior year. That number included 11 schools in Hillsborough, 10 in Pinellas, ,7 in Pasco, 5 in Polk,3 in Sarasota,2 in Hernando and 1 in Manatee.

FLA Politics calls this "another Jebacy." Florida and South Carolina have the highest percentages. About half of high schools in those states classify as dropout factories.

From the report:

“Dropout Factory” may be viewed as a harsh and unfair term. We [Center for Social Organization of Schools (CSOS) at Johns Hopkins University] use it to describe a harsh and unfair situation, under-resourced and over-challenged high schools which educate primarily low income and minority students and year after year are unable to graduate the majority or near majority of students who enter the school. We recognize that these schools are filled with hard working and dedicated teachers and administrators and resilient students. Our goal is to shine a spotlight on what has been called a “Silent Epidemic” the low graduation rates of the nation’s low income and minority students and to demonstrate that the dropout crisis is concentrated in a relatively small sub-set of schools.
